He passed away at the age of 81 on Sunday night, one day after his birthday. It’s tough to put into words how much Rod meant to everyone at Channel 9 and for the viewers at home. He was a kind man with the biggest heart and best sense of humor. I treasure the short time we worked together and thank God for the friendship I was so fortunate to build with him.
Please keep Rod’s family, friends & colleagues in your prayers as we mourn this great loss.

Caitlin Nuclo said “He was truly one of a kind. A Syracuse legend. CNY saw the veteran newsman Rod Wood on TV. But to those of us who had the privilege to work with him, he was our beloved Roddy. To know him was to love him. He was a gem. Before I left Channel 9, he gave me a picture of him on his motorcycle for me to take to my new job I still have it on my desk at work. I know I will never have another friend quite like you, Roddy. Thanks for the LAUGHS, the guidance, and all those sandwiches. Sending my love to Rod’s children, my NewsChannel 9 family, and CNY.

Iris St. Meran said ” Rod Wood was my friend. We never actually worked together, but we somehow became friends. I was honored this TV legend even knew who I was.
He always made me smile whenever I would see him. We are all better because he kept this community informed for decades. Rest in love my friend, Rod Groat.”

Michael Benny said “I’m so sad for his family, friends and former colleagues.
Retired Syracuse anchorman Rod Wood has died. He had been battling bone cancer.
Rod was a laugh-riot, and loved the inside-track, nitty gritty behind the scenes stuff/drama and most of all the people that made decades of newscasts very tough and unreachable competition for me. Rod had just retired a year and a month ago. What a terribly short retirement for a guy who deserved more. I’m sending his family the best energy I can muster.
