William Gardner Death : 21-year-old William Gardner has been identified as the man shot to death during a SWAT standoff Tuesday after police say he shot a man walking his dog earlier that day.

Gardner was shot and killed by SWAT officers as he ran out of a home on Evergreen Avenue armed with a gun after an hours-long standoff. Gardner was shot at about 9:30 a.m. in the morning and was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The incident started at about 6:50 a.m. officers responded to the area of Hoover and Evergreen avenues following a shot fired report.  Gardner fired at least six shots, striking a 49-year-old male victim walking his dog in his leg. The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment and was released.

Carper said the dog ran towards a small fire behind the house, which is when Gardner started shooting at the man. When Gardner ran out of the house with the gun, nine SWAT officers fired 37 shots, striking him multiple times.

Gardner reportedly had previous history of mental health concerns, and Police were also investigating if Gardner was involved in an incident Monday morning when officers were called to respond to shots fired, but were unable to located a victim.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is handling the criminal investigation, and the Dayton Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau will conduct the internal investigation, Carper said.
