Dublin doctor dies after contracting Covid-19

The Mater hospital in Dublin has confirmed that a doctor who worked at the hospital has died after contracting Covid-19.

In a statement issued this morning, the hospital said Dr Waqar Ali Shah passed away after spending three months in ICU being cared for diligently and attentively by his colleagues at the hospital.

It said Dr Shah was a frontline healthcare worker who provided selfless emergency care to Covid-19 patients at a number of hospitals, as a locum during the pandemic.

He was due to begin a shift at the Mater in April when he felt unwell, the statement continues. He asked to be seen as a patient and was admitted immediately with Covid-19.

The Mater says Dr Shah’s colleagues remember him as a hardworking and diligent doctor with a humble and down to earth personality.

It said it was confirming his death with “profound sadness” and extended its deepest sympathies to Dr Shah’s wife, family and loved ones at this very sad time.

Dr Shah’s death brings to eight the number of healthcare workers confirmed to have died from Covid-19.

This is Doctor Waqar Ali Shah. Born in Pakistan, he studied medicine and moved here to Ireland to practice as a doctor. He contracted covid-19 and has died after spending 3 months in the ICU in The Mater Hospital. He leaves behind a Mother, a Wife and children.

Doctor Waqar Ali Shah, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, at Mater Hospital has died after contracting Covid-19 in the line of his duty.

Paying tribute to Dr Shah this afternoon, the Irish Hospital Consultants Association said he was an “exemplary medical professional with an immense dedication to public service”.

“His expertise, care, and warmth made an impression with patients and colleagues alike. This was evident every day among those who worked with Dr. Shah and witnessed at first hand his deep commitment to healthcare,”

The Irish Association of Emergency Medicine is asking all healthcare workers across the country to pause for a moment of silence tomorrow to mark Dr Waqar Ali Shah’s death.

They said: “To mark the death of Dr Syed Waqar Ali Shah, our colleague, IAEM asks all members to pause at 12 noon tomorrow Thurs 23 July, to remember this excellent EM doctor and a true gentleman. Our deepest condolences to his family.“
