Just lost one of my dearest friends this morning. Virg Cerveny had so much influence in my life and my son Daniel’s life. He had to have been one of the toughest men I have ever known. A legend in Iowa youth bowling. His wisdom touched thousands of young adults. He will be missed dearly.
My heart is heavy, alongside countless others, after hearing the sad news that our dear friend Virg Cerveny has passed away. I, along with so many others, owe this legend among men, a great deal. He influenced, inspired, coached, and mentored so many during his time here on this earth with us.
After I heard about Virg, it didn’t quite sink in until I started reading all of the posts on Facebook of all the lives he impacted and then I’ll admit, like I’m sure so many others, I couldn’t help but shed some tears for our dearly loved friend. Again, like so many, Virg was my teammate, coach, mentor, and most of all, my friend. I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Virg on multiple occasions coaching and whether as a bowler or a coach, I have learned so much from his wisdom. The bowling trips, the stories, countless memories, are just a few things I get to look back on and cherish.
Virg gave so much to so many, but thats what he loved to do. He lived to coach and for the love of the sport. Sharing his passion, giving all that he could, even if that meant putting the needs of others ahead of his own.
I have known Virg for almost 20 years now and we met back when I was a freshman in high school, bowling in a tournament at May City Bowl for a different team, where he came up to me and started complimenting me. After that I would see him at other events and he would always ask how I’m doing. After I moved to CR, Virg shortly became a major part of my bowling family.
This has been on my mind all day and wasn’t sure what to say but I just wanted to do Virg justice by paying him tribute as best I can. My heart hurts and my thoughts and prayers go out to all the lives he has touched. The only way I feel I can honor Virg’s legacy, is to share the same passion he did and so whether I’m bowling or coaching, I will always think of you my friend and try to be that influential figure, just like you!
An angel received his wings because god wanted some bowling lessons from the best, so he called for you and now when we hear thunder rolling in, that’s virg striking it up there in heaven!
Thank you my dear friend, you will be missed greatly! May you Rest In Peace!!
Still struggling to find the right words to say and probably always will. Not the news I wanted to hear today but can’t think of a more fitting location to receive it than the bowling alley. I can’t thank Virg Cerveny enough for everything he did for me as a bowler and person in general. Truly one of the most dedicated individuals I knew whether it was being on the bus for a meet just 3 hours after being discharged from the hospital, or practically living at May City. He is a real life example that this is so much more than just bowling. This sport will have a whole new meaning starting today. Thankful he is no longer suffering but hoping he is bowling and coaching up a storm up there. Thank you Virgil, everything from here on out is for you! Rest In Peace
