The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has canceled classes on Tuesday, due to Campus Authorities investigating two possible suicides over the weekend. Student were give “wellness day.”
A student was found dead in a residence hall Saturday morning which prompt the decision.
Early Sunday morning police received a call of attempted suicide, according to campus police crime logs reviewed by NBC affiliate WRAL of Raleigh.
Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz wrote to students in a letter Sunday evening. “We are in the middle of a mental health crisis, both on campus and across the nation, and we are aware of college-aged students carry an increased risk of suicide.”
A student-led mental health resourcebPeer2Peer worker, Clare Landis said the service has seen an increase in calls.
Landis told WRAL “We almost have a second pandemic on our hands with mental health and suicide.
