I’m saddened to learn that Tony Trabert passed away. He was a great player and an excellent broadcaster. He and Pat Summerall formed the greatest tennis announcing team in history. He was always extremely nice to me and he will be missed.

When I was a kid, CBS’ big U.S. Open tennis broadcast duo was Pat Summerall & “Our Davis Cup Captain, Tony Trabert,” as Summerall always introduced him. Back when that meant something. Ex-world No. 1, was 5-0 in major finals, winning three in 1955. RIP.

He was first a player, then a champion, and eventually became a commentator, but he was always an integral part of the sport. Tony Trabert passed away on Feb. 3 at the age of 90, but he will be remembered for his talent, leadership, and the love he gave back to the game.

The tennis world has lost a true tennis legend. Tony Trabert has left the court but will always remain in our hearts. Do yourself a favor take a look at the 1980 US Open, Connors vs McEnroe and enjoy the call from Tony Trabert and Pat Summerall. It’s Pure Magic. R. I. P.
