, of whom I became a friend and admirer mostly through Facebook. Tom was preternaturally mature during our college days, just as I was ridiculously immature, actually insert stupid, perhaps bordering on loutishness as an accurate description of me. I was so pleased to have enjoyed Tom’s wit and brilliance in later days and in the wasteland that sometimes is social media. Tom was a historian and repository of so many things Columbia but perhaps mostly one of its oldest student groups, the Philolexian Society. The name means loving discourse and may date back to Alexander Hamilton’s time at Columbia, back when it was Kings College. It sure described his love of words. I checked in on him after not hearing much from him earlier in the week including a “City on the Edge of Forever” reference I was shocked he missed commenting on. He assured me all was well, “he just didn’t have much to say.” Unfortunately all wasn’t and a distinctive voice has been silenced.
. Tom was one of the most interesting, brilliant and kindest people I have ever met. Our lives crossed through a mutual friend 25 or so years ago. We were fast friends and kept in touch over the decades through email and the occasional phone call. I would try to read every article he wrote because I so enjoyed his wit and humor. He was kind enough to quote me in a NY Times article about a legal issue involving Star Trek. Over the past 10 years or so our friendship grew to the point where whenever I was in NYC I would add an extra “Tom day” just to have dinner, drinks and sterling conversation. Recently we talked about once or twice a month. His “therapy” he called it. Every phone call was 90 minutes or more and when I would hang up I felt a better person for the experience. I listened to the 4 voicemails from him on my phone today and wept a little. “Erik this is Tom… I simply *must* discuss something with you…”. Inevitably it was something seemingly trivial like a 70s sitcom or Star Trek issue and soon we would be discussing history, life issues, relationships, politics and the simple pleasures and annoyances of the human experience. I will miss him dearly. Rest In Peace my friend.
