Tom Maschler Obituary – Death | Publisher Tom Maschler Dead – Passed Away

Tom Maschler Death – Dead: A great loss was made known to InsideEko. As friends and families of the deceased are mourning the passing of their loved and cherished Tom Maschler.

For someone who so obviously had a laugh with it, there’s a disturbing lack of amusing anecdotes re. Tom Maschler on here so far. His autobiography ‘Publisher’ is excellent, taut, fun. Big RIPs

One doesn’t want to speak ill of the (very recently) dead, but Jonathan Cape publisher Tom Maschler’s autobiography – fittingly called ‘Publisher’ – led to one of the funniest reviews I can remember reading, by John Carey in the Sunday Times:

We’re extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Tom Maschler, who ran Cape from 1960 to 1988, and whose influence on British literary culture is virtually without compare. Our Publishing Director Michal Shavit called him ‘a genius, maverick, legend’:

Sorry to hear of the passing of Tom Maschler. I went to his apartment a few years back after some cock-up at the W. I went with the person whose dept had committed said cock-up as I understood who he was. After a brief carpeting he made us a G&T and we talked books. A delight.

End of an era. I met Tom Maschler just once, briefly in the lobby of 30 Bedford Square. For me, Jonathan Cape was the zenith of British writing and he the leading publisher. I retain the dream of being published there. It’s an oddly spiky obituary.

If you aren’t already aware of the incredible career of Tom Maschler, who died at 87 on Thursday, and the history of Jonathan Cape, I’d recommend this wonderful biography of the imprint

Tom Maschler, former managing director of Jonathan Cape, has died aged 87. He joined Cape in 1960 and his first buy was Catch-22, for which he paid £250. His authors included Philip Roth, Kurt Vonnegut, Len Deighton, Doris Lessing, Ian McEwan.

Sad news, as British publisher and writer Tom Maschler– who published authors from Joseph Heller to Gabriel Garcia Marquez and masterminded the Booker Prize–has died aged 87:

Toms’ daughter is my sister-in-law, he was the founder of the booker prize and a lot of other achievements. I was lucky enough to be in London a couple of times for his parties which were like a who’s who of the UKs incredibly famous and talented people.

Having heard about this great loss, the family of this individual is passing through pains, mourning the unexpected passing of their beloved.

This departure was confirmed through social media posts made by Twitter users who pour out tributes, and condolences to the family of the deceased.

We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
