Mother and two children killed in Gary, Indiana train-car accident

The Lake County Coroner has identified the woman and two children that died in Gary, Indiana train-car accident on Tuesday morning as Shermika Herbert, 37, Deyki Mitchell, 13, and Deniya Brown, 11, all from Gary, around 7:30 a.m.

A silver dodge occupied by the victim was moving at Miller Avenue and Howard Street, it tried to avoid the oncoming train when they got struck.

A witness Melvin Brown said, “Silver car tried to beat the train, It went around the barrier, and instantly they were hit by the train.” She added that “It’s gonna be stuck in my mind for a long time.”

The accident is still under investigation.
