I interviewed Sue Salthouse on March 30, 2020. It was a wide-ranging conversation about the past, present and future of the disability rights movement in Australia. Sue was an insightful, generous, deeply impressive person. We’ve lost a giant. Vale. #disability

Just when I thought 2020 couldn’t get any worse, we’ve heard of the death of our dear friend and neighbor, Sue Salthouse.

She was an inspiration to us all. I loved her take on life and wicked sense of humor. No-one could teach you about to be positive in life like Sue. She’s a huge loss to Canberra and Australia, as well as the family she loved so much

The UC community is mourning the loss of former University of Canberra Council member, Sue Salthouse, who has died in a car accident on Monday night.

“Sue Salthouse was a Canberra icon who was tireless and generous in her support for the advancement of equality for all,” said Professor Tom Calma AO, Chancellor of the University of Canberra. “She will be greatly missed, not just by all at the University, but by the Canberra community at large. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

The UC Community acknowledges with gratitude the incredible contributions of Sue.

Ave atque vale – hail and farewell.

Today we pay our respects to community leader and disability advocate, Sue Salthouse, after her sudden and tragic passing.

In 2015, Sue was honoured as the Canberra Citizen of the Year and late last year, was named the 2020 ACT Senior Australian of the Year. She was also named ACT Woman of the Year in 2014.

Sue spent her life in the service of her community. In particular she worked tirelessly to make our city a more inclusive place to live. She demonstrated an unwavering commitment to promoting an inclusive Canberra community that supports people with disability, and in particular women with disability, to achieve their full potential as citizens.

Sue contributed to a more informed and mature ACT Public Service that recognises the true value of diversity in our workplace.

Sue represented the ACT at the Council of Australian Governments Summit on Reducing Violence Against Women and their Children and was a member of the Independent Advisory Council to the NDIA board.

Sue was universally respected and will be greatly missed both personally and professionally. Sincere condolences to her family, and her friends and colleagues at this very difficult time.
