Having heard about this great loss, the family of this individual is passing through pains, mourning the unexpected passing of their beloved.

This departure was confirmed through social media posts made by Twitter users who pour out tributes, and condolences to the family of the deceased.

In “Terraced Apartment,” the playwright Steve Carter presented a satire about a lower-income Black couple who feel out of place after moving into a more upscale neighborhood in Harlem. Mr. Carter has died at 90.

“We had so many playwrights, also some we’ve lost along the way. There was one guy I thought was a really a good playwright, but he dropped out because he was already 17 & had not made his mark & thought that time had passed for him. He killed himself.”

DG mourns the loss of longtime member Steve Carter, who joined the Guild in 1978. An advocate, teacher, and leading writer of the Negro Ensemble Company, he was the first playwright in residence @victorygardens. May he rest in power.

The playwright Steve Carter emerged from the Black Arts movement and the famed Negro Ensemble Company, writing dramas and satires about the Black and Caribbean-American experiences. He died at 90.

DPS is saddened to hear of the passing of #DPSPlaywright Steve Carter. He was an original member of the Negro Ensemble Company where his play NEVIS MOUNTAIN DEW was staged and nominated for a @DramaDeskAwards for Outstanding New Play. Rest in peace.

Steve Carter, a giant of the American theatre and a stalwart of Negro Ensemble Company and Victory Gardens, died a few days ago at age 92, but not before giving this beautiful interview about NEC’s heyday to his longtime colleague Anne Cattaneo
