Seymour Topping Death – Dead: A great loss was made known to InsideEko. As friends and families of the deceased are mourning the passing of their loved and cherished Seymour Topping.

A leader who excelled in his field; reporters of his caliber may never be seen again as the Fourth Estate evolves, perhaps too far.

Seymour Topping, Former Times Journalist and Eyewitness to History, Dies at 98

“Thoughtful and precise and a cool evaluator of events and people, he was equally at home in a war zone or an interview with a world leader in Moscow or Beijing, at the helm of a newsroom tempest of breaking news, or at a university lectern ..

Sad to hear my old @columbiajourn professor, Seymour Topping, passed away. When I last saw him, since my maternal family is from the former Czechoslovakia, he gave me a book (right off his shelf!) about Václav Havel. Grateful to have learned from him. RIP.

Seymour Topping, high-powered foreign correspondent and New York Times editor, dies at 98. Reported on the Chinese Communist Revolution, First Indochina War and mass killings in Indonesia, then helped lead the Times newsroom with Abe Rosenthal:

NEW YORK (AP) — Seymour Topping, among the most accomplished foreign correspondents of his generation for The Associated Press and the New York Times and later a top editor at the Times and administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes, died on Sunday. He was 98.

Seymour Topping was perhaps the most important US correspondent covering the Chinese civil war and revolution. 70 years later, he was still serving as chair of the journalism advisory board for my @GBJprogram. On the front lines of the Cold War. RIP, Top.

I met Seymour Topping thanks to the ⁦@opcofamerica⁩ board, whose monthly meetings he attended in incredibly sharp suits well into his late 90s. RIP to a legend.

The OPC is saddened to learn that longtime OPC member Seymour Topping, a veteran foreign correspondent and editor and Columbia journalism professor, died today at the age of 98. We share a playlist of video clips from Topping’s OPC appearances here:

There’s a generation of children of immigrants, whose parents came from Eastern Europe near the turn of the 20th c., who went on to accomplish just extraordinary things. Seymour Topping was clearly one of them.

A wonderful obituary for a remarkable journalist & good man. Was lucky enough to get to know Top after his grandson, ⁦@jtcone1977, married my sister.

When I asked him to write my J-school rec, he insisted I visit & show him my clips. A great memory.

Top was a model for all of us who became foreign correspondents – adventurous, intellectual, careful. As managing ed. he coaxed along 25-yr-old reporters, like me, who he could have ignored. He read us into his late 90’s. A generation at NYT will miss him.

R.I.P.

He was one of the most accomplished foreign correspondents of his generation and a newsroom leader under the renowned executive editor A.M. Rosenthal.

Along with Edgar Snow and Theodore White among a generation of China reporters who took journey to the beginning, paraphrasing title Snow’s must-read book for journalists. Seymour Topping dead at 98.

A giant of journalism passed today. Top welcomed me into the Topping clan in 1974. He set the bar for what it took to be an ethical human being, epitomized professional excellence and doing the right thing even when no one was looking.
