Sam Porretta was a son, brother, partner, father, friend, artist and collaborator of unparalleled compassion, grace and generosity of spirit. He has left this realm but will always remain alive in the hearts and minds of the many people he touched with his amazing gifts and life lessons.
Please consider a contribution of any amount and share widely to support his life partner and boys through this unthinkable loss and help provide a platform for their healing and way forward. The funds will be given to his partner, Ania, to use as she sees fit for their family’s future.
This kind man. This generous man. This beautiful, gentle, blindingly creative man.
Sam Porretta lifted me up as an early-20’s theater artist and cracked open what I understood art could be. Working with him on G.I.F.T. in all of its myriad, strange forms was transformational. Watching him play and craft and celebrate as he built each of the Collaboraction parties directly lead to how we created the Our Fair City live events.
Beginnings and endings- I keep coming back to the gentle, still moments he built in that huge warehouse, watching people walk a labyrinth and listen to sounds echo through the space as candles flickered and danced up and down the walls. And then also the dancing and yelling and singing at the bonfire at the end- intentional, beautiful moments of Solitude and Community.
They mirror my experience working alongside him: he made me feel included and held close in a space I always felt like I wasn’t quite cool enough to move in, and gave space for those around him to have moments of individual brilliance and action.
Rest well, friend. I’m so lucky to have known you.
Sam Porretta , I’m so saddened to hear you are no longer with us. You always had this gracious and warming smile. Every time we saw each other at a casting call you made an effort to reach out and without trying you made my nerves disappear. My heart goes to your wife and kids. Our community is in pain – love ya man. RIP my brother.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
