G2 Venture Partners, the firm Popple joined in February, expressed their condolences for the “unexpected passing” of Ryan Popple, former CEO of Proterra and venture investor at Kleiner.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our colleague and dear friend, Ryan Popple. Ryan embodied the entrepreneurial spirit and devoted his life to creating a better future. His leadership at Proterra was first and foremost about increasing access to affordable, sustainable solutions and shaping a zero-emission transportation future for the benefit of our planet and the health of our communities. His work as a partner at G2 Venture Partners and Kleiner Perkins was dedicated to leading the sustainable transformation of industries. A former active-duty officer in the U.S. Army, Ryan put country before self in uniform, and in civilian life. His legacy lives on not only at Proterra but with the communities around the world who can breathe easier and imagine a brighter future thanks to Ryan’s inspiring and transformational vision. Above all, Ryan was a husband, father, and friend. We mourn with his family.

Popple earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from William & Mary in 2000. Following graduation, he joined the United States Army as an armour cavalry officer, where he served as an escort for fuel convoys during a deployment in Iraq. In addition, he attended Harvard Business School. He received his MBA there and was named a Baker Scholar, which means he was among the top 5% of graduates.

Popple received recognition for his work at Proterra. As a partner at Kleiner Perkins, which was founded in 2004, he assisted in the leadership of some investments. Popple became CEO of the Burlingame-based company in 2014 and served in that role until March 2020 when he became its executive director.

“This makes me so sad. I did an event with @Proterra during the Global Climate Summit in 2018, and I was so impressed with CEO Ryan Popple. He was so smart, inspiring, and dedicated to climate solutions. He helped make a #CleanEnergy future reality. Only the good die young.”

He joined the G2VP just as Proterra was preparing to go public through a merger with a blank-check company. Proterra (Nasdaq:PTRA) completed the merger in June.

No plans have been announced for Ryan Popple obituary and funeral yet.
