Roy Charles Hammond was born August 3, 1939 and was a southern soul singer, songwriter and record executive, best known for his 1965 hit, “Shotgun Wedding.” Another song, “Impeach the President,” which he recorded and produced with a high school group, the Honey Drippers, has had one of the most sampled drum tracks in hip hop music. Since 1979, he released a string of soul singles and albums, on his own Three Gems record label, initially based in New York and later in Allendale, South Carolina. Hammond wrote most of the songs that appear on his more than 125 records. Hammond also owned and ran a record shop in Allendale, called Carolina Record Distributors.

Very close to me & my mom..He called to check up on us often..Now i can tell my mom why he hadn’t call lately or returned her call.. We knew he was sick..Had a heart attack sometime ago..I remember 1st time meeting him 20+ yrs ago…He picked me up in his Caddilac then a limo..I’ll never forget you for what you did for me!!!Damn this one hurt
