Ron (Bud) Sparrow fought & challenged injustice through R v. Sparrow, pushing for the recognition of Indigenous rights under s.35 of the Constitution.

It is with deep sadness that the Sparrow family and Musqueam announce the passing of Ron (Bud) Sparrow late on September 14, 2020. Bud was the defendant in the renowned “Sparrow case” decided in 1990 by the Supreme Court of Canada. Read our statement:

Ronald (Bud) Sparrow passed away this week. He was a cherished member of the Musqueam First Nation and a champion for Indigenous rights in Canada as the defendant in R. v. Sparrow.

The Advocate is saddened to hear of the passing of the legendary Bud Sparrow, a proud member of the Musqueam Nation and the appellant in R. v. Sparrow, one of the most significant legal developments of the 20th century in Canada.

We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
