Ronald Bell Aka Khalis Bayyan Death – Dead | Obituary – Passed Away

Ronald Bell Death – Dead: A great loss was made known to InsideEko. As friends and families of the deceased are mourning the passing of their loved and cherished Ronald Bell.

I just read Ronald Bell (also known as Khalis Bayyan) one of the founder members of Kool and the Gang has passed at 69 – not that old these days. Kool were one of the giants of 70’s funk, their raw, horn punctuated sound heard on songs like “Funky Stuff” and “Jungle Boogie” was genre defining. Whilst they also made some wonderful more soulful pieces like “Whisper Softly”, “Sugar” and of course “Summer Madness”. By the the early 80’s they had changed their sound to a slicker, poppier radio friendly brand of funk, with James JT Taylor on lead vocals and Deodato producing. This yielded them many crossover hits. Personally speaking Kool and the Gang were one of my entry points into funk and disco. I loved “Ladies Night” and “Too Hot” as new releases and I recall coming up to London in 1980 looking for their old albums and buying Wld & Peaceful, Love & Understanding, Open Sesame and The Force LPs as cuts out. Their music will always be special to me. R.I.P.

As one of the founders—alongside his brother, Robert “Kool” Bell— he contributed to and co-wrote some of the biggest, most danceable hits of the 20th century. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist (although his primary role in the band was on saxophone,), Bell spent 53 of his 68 years on the planet as a member of The Gang, winning Grammys, charting Top 10 singles, and refusing to ever settle into a single, easily defined groove. Blessings and condolences to his family and many fans. RIP brother Khalis!

#RIP L E G E N D

2020 continues to take more light from this world, y’all. Our brotha from anotha, Ronald Bell (aka Khalis Bayyan), passed on today. They all hurt but this one will sting a little longer since we have been blessed in our lives to work with this legend many, many times over the past 25 years. Certain artists touch you in a way that make you want to continually work with them. Be it their personality, professionalism or a tireless work ethic some are just built different. Khalis/Ronald checked all the boxes and then some.

Khalis was beyond iconic in the music industry from his pitch perfect songwriting, absolutely killer sax playing and a complete command of a stage during live performances. All of this, of course, was done as co-founder of legendary R&B power group Kool & the Gang. Alongside younger brother, Robert “Kool” Bell, they built a sound that was at once wholly original while also incorporating bits from the Jazz, Funk, Soul, Pop and Motown influences they grew up on. When you listen to the 23 albums of magic they released over a four decade run you can hear every one of them.

There isn’t a single person that hasn’t been touched by the soul-filled music these guys blessed us with. As the Summer 2020 Madness continues we encourage you to take a minute to breathe and give yourself a moment for Celebration in honor of Khalis & the Gang. Ronald Bell left an indelible mark “in our hearts and in our minds” and we won’t ever forget him. RIH brother
