Father Timm passed away yesterday in the US at the age of 97. He dedicated a huge part of his life to the service of the people of Bangladesh. We will remain ever grateful to him. May he rest in peace!

Bangladesh’s friend, Rev. Fr. Richard William Timm, C.S.C. left us yesterday afternoon (Friday, September 11th) at Holy Cross House, South Bend, Indiana.

Fr Timm was a member of the Sacred Heart Province and served in Bangladesh for about 66 years.

Fr Timm was one of the pioneering figures in Bangladesh’s education sector.

He was an educator, zoologist, and active participant in social development work. The former Superior of the Congregation of Holy Cross in Dhaka, he was also one of the founders of Notre Dame College and served as the sixth principal of the College. Fr Timm was ordained at Notre Dame in 1949, and then was assigned to get a one-year master’s degree in biology in order to found the science department of a new college for boys in Dhaka, East Pakistan. He arrived in Dhaka in October 1952 and had lived there ever since. He joined Caritas as a planning officer, taking charge of war-time projects for devastated villages following the Liberation war in Bangladesh. In 1974, after starting the Justice & Peace Commission, he served as the executive secretary for 23 years.

Rest in peace, dear Fr Timm.

Rev. Fr. Dr. Richard William Timm was an educator, zoologist, and development worker. He was also the Principal and one of the founders of Notre Dame College in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

I am very late to know that yesterday we lost one of the greatest souls who was forever friend of Bangladesh. He is no other than our beloved Reverend Fr Richard William Timm, C.S.C, who passed away in his birth place in Indiana. He witnessed much of the history of Bangladesh since he arrived as an educator in 1952 with the Holy Cross Fathers. He was one of the founders of Notre Dame College in Dhaka, Bangladesh and was the 6th principal (1970 to 1972) of this college. He was also a renowned biologist who had written textbooks. He later became heavily involved in the relief work to respond to cyclone Bhola in 1970 and the Liberation War in 1971 through his work with Caritas Bangladesh.

He dedicated much effort and action on human rights and justice. When the cyclone and massive tidal surge of November 1970 devastated the coast of Bengal, he mobilised relief and for the first time encountered brutal communal conflicts and rural power struggles. Initiating and coordinating relief funded by foreign charities, he demonstrated a concern for all in need, regardless of creed or ethnic origin. In recognition of their contribution in Bangladesh’s liberation war, he and a few other distinguished foreign nationals received honorary citizenship from the Government of Bangladesh in 2011.

Father Timm had more hope in changed people than in changed structures and political systems. I feel blessed that I had a rare chance to spend wonderful time with him back in early 90’s. Being motivated by reading his auto-biography, “40 years in Bangladesh: Memoirs of Father Timm,” I visited him at his work place in Caritas’s Dhaka office. He was so generous to give time to a young student like me who went there without any appointment. Life and work of a few persons like him later motivated me to shift my career from science to development. I am sharing the only picture from that memorable day that will be my precious memory.

Rest in peace, dear Father Timm! Persons like you inspired me to remain hopeful about mankind. And from your life’s teaching, may we learn how to spread selfless love!

REST IN PEACE.

Richard William Timm
