“Extremely devastated to hear the news of Ramses Rao Ramses – Creative Works passing early in the morning today.
Ramses leaves behind a design legacy that was visually captivating and a creative fluidity that not many can re-create and re-capture. This would definitely be a great loss for the Malaysian Tamil entertainment industry, and in fact the Malaysian visual design community itself, in which Ramses had rooted himself in. His talent is at a whole another level, and his designs would continue to stay alive in the coming generations of creative practitioners.
Reminiscing my time with Ramses, I first met Ramses in Ravivarma Vicraman‘s studio while working for a project. I think we immediately connected as we both had visions to pool our talents for a more sustainable scene.
We did keep in touch a few times after that, and there were a few instances, Navinn Gounder Navinn Rajendran II and I wanted to collaborate, bringing our words to his visuals, while nothing concrete materialized, our conversations influenced the course of our works – Ramses with Next Level Lah, and us venturing into digital magazine production (we had the opportunity to feature Ramses in it), in which Ramses graciously provided us with essential feedback on the layout and visuals.
I believe there were two ‘big jumps’ in terms of design output in the Malaysian Tamil entertainment scene, the first being when PSYCHO.unit released Rabbit & Friendz 1 (album), Rockaboy (music video) (Vinoth Madivanan, Candyman)– the minimalistic and bright visuals reinvigorated the M’sian Tamil entertainment industry which was visually decaying. And, the second ‘big jump’, was when Ramses started to make his presence in the scene through his posters for independent talents and also I believe for the movie Atcham Thavir. His breakthrough lyric video, Sempoi, set a new path for him. Ramses continued to play an influence in the the global Tamil independent music scene when he went into management with Sollisai Records & more, bringing his visual mastery to another level. Not to mention, his work with Next Level Lah on Instagram highlighted many talents in Malaysia and beyond.
Looking at Ramses’ influence on the visuals of the Malaysian Tamil music industry, there was a time, Ramses became the most sought after poster designer within the Malaysian Tamil entertainment ecosystem.
Ramses, while it is shocking you are gone, your designs will continue to live on. And your work will continue to live through the pages of the Malaysian Tamil entertainment industry, from underground hip hop acts to commercial movies, you did it all – down & far.”
