I am still in shock and deeply saddened to hear the passing of my teacher, Mr. Phillip Kawin. A passionate musician, one of the most inspiring and dedicated teachers of the world, and a human with warmth and a child-like soul without a mask. “Life shouldn’t be too serious!” I still linger on his saying whenever I encounter life’s challenges. Mr. Kawin, I still want to hear you pronounce Tchaikovsky and Prokofieff in your own Russian accent. Gee, you sped up too much on your way to heaven. Will hear your Russian when we meet later, ok? We will all miss you. Rest in Peace, Mr. Widmung. Thank you for being my teacher.
Professor Phillip Kawin, a great teacher, very sincere friend left us, still hard to believe. It was the last moment when I sent him the message reminding him of Wednesday night online lesson. (In fact, I told him to postpone all teaching schedule until he gets recovered. But he wanted to teach. Every time I made a schedule, he said over and again, please reschedule. Then, every time I said let’s cancel all schedule. But he insists no. Like this, it is gone for about 6 weeks. ) It was Wednesday early morning at New York time at 06.00 am. He said, “I told you I shall sleep at late night and don’t wake me up!., No, I have been woken up. Is it barely 6.00am?????.” For the whole day, strange feeling and worried about him. He was so skinny and weak physically but his spirit was strong at Monday online lessons. So many memories with him for many years.. ..feel like being lost my family. Couldn’t stop tearing…

I am totally shocked and sad to hear of the passing of my very special New York piano professor, Phillip Kawin.(only aged 64), especially because I didn’t know he was sick. I met him when I was 16 yrs old in Australia. He helped me to receive a scholarship to MSM and I moved to New York at age 19 (1994) and studied with him during my 5 years there. He was so supportive, like a father to me during this time. We have kept in touch via FB since my return to Australia, 20 years ago. His commitment and passion for teaching was amazing. Finding meaning in every phrase of music and solving technical challenges was like an intriguing puzzle for him. He would try many different approaches until he found the correct one for each student. He was kind, talented, funny, so generous and dedicated to his craft as a performer, adjudicator and teacher in the US and internationally. He will be remembered and missed by so many. I named 1 of our 8 music studios at Kidko Performing Arts the Phillip Kawin Studio, when we opened.

I’m extremely saddened and in shock to hear the sudden passing of my beloved professor, mentor and friend Mr. Phillip Kawin, that I’ve known half my life since I was 15. It’s been a true privilege to be under your tutelage at Manhattan School of Music and thank you for guiding me from my precollege days all the way up to my masters. I’ll always keep in mind all the invaluable teachings and advice you have given me. I will always remember you and the good times in New York and you will be dearly missed. Rest In Peace Prof. Kawin
