Tributes To Peter Jenkins
Across social media users’ timelines are statements that show respect, admiration, and gratitude towards Jenkins as people mourn the passing.
RIP Peter Jenkins. While we didn’t always see eye to eye on some issues, I always enjoyed chatting with you and getting your take on a subject. I remember one revelation of yours years ago at the Council table during your last term as Mayor, one that I repeat from time to time and always give you credit for: “In the North, money is just a concept”. Just a month or so ago we had what I did not know would be our last conversation… we chatted about the history of trying to get a bridge built across the Yukon River in Dawson, what went wrong with that effort, and what you thought needed to be done to make that happen one day. The photo here is from 2012. My folks were visiting me in Dawson and I left them to walk around by themselves one afternoon in August… they came back that evening and told me that they had met the Mayor and his wife Karen. It saddens me greatly that there is only one person in this photo still alive today… my father. My mother Sylvia died from cancer a couple of years ago, as did Karen Meier Jenkins. My condolences to all of Peter’s family and friends.RIP Peter.
The Yukon Party
Statement from Leader Currie Dixon on the passing of Peter Jenkins: “The Yukon Party is very sad to learn of the recent passing of Peter Jenkins. Peter was a three-term MLA for the Klondike and served as the Yukon Party’s Interim Leader from 2000-2002. “The Yukon Party is greatly indebted to Peter for almost single-handedly keeping the party alive during those difficult years when he was the sole Yukon Party MLA. “Peter was a pillar of the community in Dawson City where he served as Mayor and a prominent member of the business community. He and his late wife Karen cared deeply about Dawson City and its people and were involved in numerous charitable endeavors. “Our condolences go out to his family, and all of his friends and colleagues in Dawson City. “Peter was one of a kind, and he will be missed by many.”
