Sad news. We lost someone special in the running community
I was devestated to hear the news of the passing of my friend Pat Hooper. Pat was a stranger to me when I first approached him about marshalling Clontarf half marathon 11 years ago.
A strong friendship formed as we kept bumping into each other at races handing out leaflets.
At the start I used to hope Pat wouldn’t be there because everyone took a leaflet from Pat and I’d be standing there whistling…
And there was a reason for that – Pat is an athletic legend and an olympian. But most of all he is a really nice fella.
Then over the years the chats became longer and I really enjoyed a cuppa in his very orange conservatory where we talked about life, love and happiness….
We’d spend half the time chatting and then half the time checking out the Clontarf course before the race.
The picture shows Pat standing at the half way point for the 5 mile. Everytime we did the course reiki we’d constantly bump into people who knew Pat in random places.
He was a much loved, iconic and humble person. He will be missed.
I will miss you Pat
My sympathies to his family and friends and the wider community in Raheny and of course Raheny Shamrocks AC.
Many of you who took part in Clontarf over the years would have passed Pat twice at the entrance to the wooden bridge. He was marshalling but also half scouting for local talent to join the Raheny Shamrocks AC….. He never missed an opportunity 🙂
Thank you Pat

Our sincere sympathy this morning, to the St. Anne’s parkrun Community and Raheny Shamrocks Athletic Club, on the sudden passing of Pat Hooper. RIP.
Pat was very well known in athletics circles. He competed for Ireland in the Olympic marathon in Moscow in 1980 and had a stellar athletics career. More recently, he was involved with Dublin County Board and Athletics Leinster. May Pat rest in peace.

Masters are everywhere but legends are rare. RIP Pat Hooper ☘️. Not just an Olympian and a National champion but the kindest, most supportive, funniest man I had the pleasure to know with a shout that could cross an entire cross country field and by god did it work. A total father figure to me, I’m beyond devastated with the sorry news of his passing. He was the heart, soul and life of this club and it goes without saying he will be missed. I for one, will miss his steady cycle in his hi vis vest around the hill past my house and his big enveloping hugs on a Tue night post race. Hopefully he’s having a slice of cake and a pint with Maeve right now. All my thoughts go out to his family and club mates at this time. We’ll miss you Pat💔💚☘️
It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to the legendary Pat Hooper, who passed away today. This has left a huge hole in all of our lives and in our community.
Pat was a true gent, a legend, a friend, an Olympian, an all around lovely man.
He made such a huge positive impact in our community and was always there to encourage and enjoy watching new talents emerge at every level.
Pat always wanted to keep running at the centre of all our lives.
He put his full support behind us and played a part in the success of our junior parkrun.
Every January he always encouraged our juniors to participate in the kids races before the Raheny 5.
Many of us are lucky to have had the pleasure of knowing Pat. He is loved by all & he will be sorely missed.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
Thank you Pat, you are and will be greatly missed.
