My teacher taught me among many other things that copying was fine. That the copy originates. That you didn’t need to read anything. That experimenting was all he needed. He taught me that having witnesses to our experience enriches us. I’m sad. Happy journey Paolo #PaoloKnill

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Emeritus Paolo Knill, a leading figure in developing expressive therapies at Lesley.

Knill, a native of Switzerland, was a professor of counseling psychologies and expressive arts therapies. He was 88

A great man has left us. Two days ago Paolo Knill died while swimming together with his wife Margo Fuchs. He exited time in the same way as he was born – through the element of water.

There are no words to fully express Paolo’s work and his contribution for the development of the Expressive Arts in the world. Paolo was a true founder. He was among the pioneers, therapists and artists in the 1970’s, at Leslie Graduate School, in Cambridge, USA, who collaborated around developing trainings and methods of the healing arts in therapy, social change and personal growth. Later Paolo dedicated his time and efforts to founding the inspirational school European Graduate School in Saas Fee, Switzerland, his native country.

I met Paolo over 30 years ago. I contribute my lifelong commitment and engagement to EXA to the initial connection with Paolo. His passion, playfulness, and curiosity over the unfolding process we call life, never ceased. To me he was a genuine teacher, an immense inspiration, and most important, a trusted fellow musician. He was also a researcher and clear thinker. He never stopped playing or learning. At the core of his love for the arts was his devotion to music. This is where we deeply connected. Years ago we recorded a CD called Queen of Time. This was a high for me – spending about 10 days with Paolo in a lovely recording studio. Never talking about theories, methods, research or politics, just being in the music. Serving something greater.

There is so much to say about Paulo. He has contributed and supported us at Expressive Arts Stockholm. My partner Gunder Forss and I have enjoyed the pleasure of many visits and personal meetings with Paolo and Margo. They have brought richness, beauty, and deep knowledge to our institute. For this we express our gratitude.

More about Paolo will come… For now, I bow my head, light a candle, and express my love and deep appreciation for having met and known this great, and beautiful man. He is truly missed… /Margareta

It is with deep love and regret that I share the news of Paolo Knill’s passing on Sunday, September 13 th. A founding father of Expressive Arts Therapy, Paolo was a profoundly significant friend to me and an advocate of the work of Tamalpa Institute. Author, master teacher, theoretician and Founder of the European Graduate School, his groundbreaking vision and work shaped the field. He educated countless students and practitioners, inspired and supported colleagues, and created the first network of healing art institutes. He will be sorely missed and always remembered. The imprint of his legacy will continue to lead the way.
