Paddy Garritty Death – Dead | Passed Away – Obituary

Paddy Garritty Death – Dead: A great loss was made known to InsideEko. As friends and families of the deceased are mourning the passing of their loved and cherished Paddy Garritty.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Paddy Garritty over the weekend.

Paddy played a very important role in bringing the arts to Trades Hall; setting the foundations for what is now a hub of creativity and activism.

His invaluable contribution to the arts and social justice will endure.

Vale Paddy Garritty.

UWU stalwart (AUWU members take note) the inimitable Paddy Garritty has died at 83. Presente Paddy! Here is one short memoir of many that are being posted, about unemployed workers activism:

“Bill Bartlett:

I heard some sad news today, the inimitable Paddy Garritty has passed away. Covid claims another victim.

I mention it here, because I remember Paddy as a stalwart of the Hobart Unemployed Workers Union in the 1970’s. He was often in the news back then. Almost a celebrity figure. Interviewed on This Day Tonight, a predecessor to the 7.30 Report, I fondly remember him Lifting up his foot to the camera, showing the hole in his shoe, to illustrate the poverty he was protesting. One famous incident occurred during a visit by Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, the UWU set up a soup kitchen to protest the government’s policies and a cup of soup was thrown at Fraser. The media went berserk, but Paddy doubled-down, declaring in a media interview that what they didn’t know was that he had pissed in the soup before tossing it at the PM.

Actually he often upset other members of the Hobart UWU for his media stunts, which they sometimes grumbled tended to be counter-productive. But Paddy kept the UWU in the public gaze and was never without something to say.

He was not just a media hound though, he was tireless in practical organising. He took advantage of his links with the maritime unions and people he knew in Melbourne to help organise a stall in the fledgling Salamanca Market. Selling nuts and dried fruit, which he had noticed were quite overpriced in Tasmania. But he had a contact in Melbourne who was an importer and he knew that he could freight goods to Tasmania for free, smuggled aboard ships crewed by his mates in the seamens union.

What with stalls staffed by unemployed volunteers, it gave the Unemployed Workers Union a winning competitive edge and before long they had developed the business into a highly successful health food business. One spin-off was today’s Eumarrah, which was started by someone who had learned the business from working in the UWU Wholefoods store at 390 Murray St. and moved out to set up in competition.

But none of it would have happened without Paddy Garritty. He later moved to Melbourne where he became heavily involved in the arts, but he never ceased to be a dedicated socialist.

Vale a working class hero. Paddy Garritty.

Paddy Garritty was, tragically, one of the too many Victorians this week dealt a death blow by the pandemic. A militant all his life, Paddy was in the Painters and Dockers Union, ran the bar at Trades Hall for many years and had an abiding interest in creative writing and art.

Ah no. A great loss today with the passing of Paddy Garrity. The comrade’s True Comrade, Paddy was kind face & mentor for me early in my fledgling activist life & move to Melbourne. Paddy made his eponymous bar at Trades Hall a safe space before the term was coined. #ValePaddy

Sad today to mark the passing of Paddy Garritty. What a legend of solidarity, community and the rights and needs of working people- art, health, work and power. The world is better for your time and let us all be inspired by you, to what is always possible. Thank you Paddy.

RIP Paddy Garrity. A staunch supporter of East Timor. Under Leigh Hubbard as secretary, Vic Trades Hall building was hive of activities for organising rallies, phone-arounds and banner & placard making in 1999. Paddy as building manager was central to all this
