We are sad to share the loss of our fellow Lion Mike Kegley. Lion Mike has left a imprint on our community that made it a better place for generations to come. He was a dedicated serviceman to his country, and to this whole region. Thank you Lion Mike for making the USS Edson dream a reality, for your gift of enchanting us with your stories, for flipping pancakes in the early mornings of tag days, for hosting youth Leo groups on the ship, for big belly laughs and your listening ear, for the life lessons, for your service, for your Lionism, and most importantly for your friendship.
With heavy hearts, we are sharing the news of the passing of Chief Mike Kegley of the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum/USS Edson. You will be missed beyond measure. Fair winds and following seas, Chief. We have the watch.
I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Saginaw Valley Ship Museum President Mike Kegley. I first met Mike on May 17, 2012, when the US Navy officially transferred ownership of the Forrest Sherman-class destroyer USS Edson (DD-946) to the museum. (Top image below) Mike and his dedicated group of volunteers worked tirelessly for years to secure the vessel, declared a National Historic Landmark in 1990, and turn it into the floating museum now permanently docked in Bay City. Requiescat In Pace “Chief”, you will be missed but never forgotten. 😔( Mid-Michigan NOW image)
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
