Legendary Iowa wildlife artist Maynard Reece passed away at 100 years old this week, but his artwork continues to live on at the Iowa DNR – thank you for sharing your gifts with us and all Iowans, Maynard.

Here’s a look at Maynard and his work from a 2011 episode of Iowa Outdoors.

Legendary Iowa artist Maynard Reece passed away last Saturday at age 100.

His connection to the State Historical Society of Iowa goes back to 1940 when Iowa Historical Museum Director Jack Musgrove hired him to paint many of the museum’s dioramas. Today, the museum holds 46 Maynard Reece items in its collection, including paintings, prints, plates, decoys and documents.

Reece and his mentor, Ding Darling – the conservationist and Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for The Des Moines Register – had a deep appreciation for nature. Both painted artwork for the prestigious Federal Duck Stamp, which has funded the purchase of more than 5 million acres of waterfowl habitat since the program began in 1934.
