Just found-out today that my Friend and the Political Director of the Southern Center of Human Rights, Attorney Marissa McCall Dodson died. Marissa helped to write the Citizens Arrest Repeal Bill (HB 479) that passed the Georgia General Assembly this past session. It is the first repeal of a citizens arrest statute in any state in America. Marissa was also vital to the passage of the Georgia Hate Crimes Bill during the 2020 legislative session. These are just two of many Social Justice bills that Marissa had a direct impact on the drafting and passage of the legislation. Marissa embodied the spirit of a Fearless Social Justice Warrior that knew the Black-Letter of the Law like few other attorneys. This is a huge loss for the State of Georgia. Marissa, I will truly miss your presence here on Earth and working with you. Rest in Peace, My Friend…

Christine A. Koehler, Attorney at Law

When I tell you this was sudden and shocking….I am still processing the death. Marissa McCall was the Public Policy Director Southern Center for Human Rights. I met her in 2019, when my colleagues and I attended a #bipartisan Criminal Justice Reform Forum at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Marissa McCall’s presentation was so impressive. Her knowledge and commitment to criminal justice reform was top notch.
I know her family is grieving, may God give them the strength to get through this. The Criminal Justice Reform Community has lost a true champion. #RIP
Marissa McCall lived with such clarity that her love for people could be felt deeply. She was authentic in the most beautiful sense of the word. Jana Johnson-Davis and I are so grateful that she was a friend and comrade. She made the world so much better. We lift her immediate family, close friends, and her SCHR family in our prayers. Rest in Power Queen! We love You!!”
“I’m devastated at the sudden loss of my sister always my rock – I don’t know how the world can keep spinning without you – my heart is empty today – all my love to you and your family – I can’t even say Rest In Peace when my head and heart are screaming for God to send you back Marissa McCall you are the best and smartest person I’ve ever known with empathy and compassion at the forefront of all you do”
“Gideon’s Promise is saddened by news of the passing of Marissa McCall Dodson. Marissa was a true “sister of the movement” who worked tirelessly to amplify the voice of people impacted by an unjust criminal legal system. Our hearts go out to the family of Marissa and her Southern Center for Human Rights colleagues. Rest in Peace Marissa”

“Like so many others I am totally devastated and heart broken. I met Marissa in 2008 when I began to work on the Ban the Box Campaign. We immediately became friends, mother daughter, mentee mentor and partners in changing a system that has held so many of us hostage. Marissa McCall calmness of spirit, loyalty, love for others, her laughter and generosity will truly be missed. Angel I know you are in Heaven spreading your love and joy to everyone you touch as you did here on earth. I love you and will always love you and think of you. #RestInPeace!!!”
