Tributes To Margaret Forsyth

Across social media users’ timelines are statements that show respect, admiration, and gratitude towards Forsyth as people mourn the passing.

It is with deep sadness that my friend and colleague Margaret Forsyth has passed away.

My deepest sympathies to her whanau.
It’s hard to know the right things to say at times like this about someone as special as Margaret.
I met Marg when she first stood for Council in 2010 and we quickly became friends. She was never one to mince her words and would call it like she saw it.
We use to laugh after meetings where she’d been particulary fired up over an issue that she was invoking her formal life as a Police Officer. She had a unique way of cutting through the politics and getting straight to the guts of a matter, she was a formidable force.
But as straight talking as she was with her work hat on, she was a sensitive soul. She was supportive, and an incredibly kind and gentle woman who was quick to smile, and loved a good laugh.
Margaret and I spent many fun times together over the past 11 years and formed a lasting friendship, she will be missed.
Whenever we were discussing problems or just chewing the fat, Margaret was always the one to light up and say “Oh, I’ve got an idea!”. More often than not she’d then critique her own idea and at times saying “nah, that wouldn’t work, forget that”…. and then she’d laugh at herself. But at other times, she knew she was onto something, and then came ‘formidable Marg’.
Margaret was the Councillor who had the big idea of Hamilton becoming a bike friendly city. She developed the Bike Plan for the city that will be the guiding way. That will be her legecy for the city.
Recently with her return to Council after a one term break she had the idea to plant a million trees. And she wanted to start with a lane of cherry trees. Big ideas from a woman with an even bigger heart.
I heard a saying a long time ago by Eleanor Roosevelt that said “Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, and small minds discuss people”. It will always remind me of Margaret – with her great mind, and her big ideas.
R.I.P Councillor and friend

“Even when injury forced Marg to hang up her bib, her love of the game spilled over into coaching and there will be many netballers she has guided in both the Waikato and at national level, who will fondly remember the netball coach.

“We were delighted to see her recognised in the New Year’s Honours last year as an acknowledgement for what she has given to both our sport and her community.

“We are deeply saddened at her passing and send Marg’s family our love at this time.”
