Man dead after chase ends in officer involved shooting in Shelby County

Memphis, Tenn. — One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Shelby County late Tuesday night.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday at about 10:45 p.m. a deputy saw a car stopped on Houston Levee near Pisgah Road and stopped to check on the driver.

The driver waved a rifle at the deputy and then barricaded himself in the vehicle. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office’s SWAT Team and negotiators were called to the scene.

While negotiators worked to reestablish contact with the suspect he sped away in the vehicle. A SWAT vehicle and a deputy’s vehicle were damaged when the man drove off. Officers pursued the suspect.

Deputies report that the suspect fired several shots during the chase. When the road the chase ended on Dexter Road just past Milbray Street the suspect exited the vehicle with the rifle and SCSO says that an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The TBI will be taking over the investigation. His identity was not immediately disclosed.
