71-year-old man fatally shot in off Wentworth Avenue Chinatown Tuesday
Investigations are ongoing in Chinatown after a 71-year-old man was shot to death on a sidewalk Tuesday afternoon while heading to a store to purchase a newspaper.
Authorities say that at about 12:30 p.m., the male victim was walking on the sideway in the 200 block of West 23rd Place, off Wentworth Avenue, when a suspect in a silver two-door car pulled up right next to him and opened fire, striking the victim multiple times. The suspect got out of the vehicle and fire more shots towards the old man and then fled the scene in an unknown direction.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene just across John C. Haines Elementary School. Arriving officials located the victim and transported him to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where he was pronounced dead.
After investigations, police arrested the suspected gunman at Jackson Boulevard and the Kennedy Expressway, a weapon was also recovered and is currently being questioned by Area Four detectives.
The identity of the 71-year-old victim is pending next of kin’s notification and forensic investigations.
