It is with a heavy heart that Bernalillo County Fire & Rescue acknowledges the passing of BCFD’s very first Fire Chief Louis Anthony Santillanes.
On September 15th, 1958, Bernalillo County Commission officially opened Bernalillo County’s first fire department, Fire District No. 1, also known as the Alameda Fire District. Mr. Louis Anthony Santillanes became the first Volunteer Fire Chief in Bernalillo County.
Chief Santillanes in the coming years assisted in establishing three more fire districts (2, 3, & 4) that were located in the South Valley.
Today BCFD has evolved from a single Volunteer Fire House with many local citizens helping their neighbors to an all career staff with 12 Fire Stations and over 260 paid personnel.
This would not be possible without the vision, hard work, and dedication of Chief Santillanes.
BCFD wants to honor and remember Chief Santillanes and express our condolences to the Santillanes family.
