Leo Lehner, 15, died on Monday 11 October 2021, after suffering an apparent seizure and fell overboard during rowing practice.
Lehner was a freshman at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School in Dayton.
Greg Mueller the school’s principal made a statement following Lehner’s death: “We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of one of our students, Leo Lehner, a member of the class of 2025.
“In his short time as a student at Chaminade Julienne, Leo demonstrated a love for learning and an interest in taking advantage of all that CJ has to offer.”
Leo’s father told police his son had a long history of epilepsy and had seizures “during his most calm moments.”
Rescue crews were dispatched at 6:37 p.m. to Dayton Boat Club at 3414 E. River Road in Moraine, according to a Moraine Police Division call for service report.
“We are at the rowing club, and we have a rower in the water who has not come up,” a woman said in a 911 call.
Getting to the scene, the crew search for Lehner for over an hour before recovering him at around 7:25 a.m., according to the police report.
A coach from the Dayton Boat Club told the police on the scene that Leo had a seizure and fell over the side of the boat.
Dan Meixner, Chaminade Julienne’s president, said: “The Lehner family and the Beyer family have been longtime friends of the CJ community, and this loss is deeply felt by all those who cared about Leo and his loving family.”
Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School wrote on Facebook:
“The Chaminade Julienne community grieves the loss of one of our students, Leo Lehner ‘25. In his short time at CJ, Leo demonstrated a love for learning, joy as a member of the CJ community, and a deep passion for serving others. Leo exemplified the profile of a CJ student, a student in the process of becoming a service-oriented, life-long learner and a person of compassion and integrity.
While we are heartbroken, we look to God as our refuge and our strength to lift us up from the darkness of this grief to the peace and light of God’s presence.
Please keep the Lehner family, the CJ community, and all who share in this deeply felt loss in your prayers.”
Peggy Lehner for Kettering Mayor mentioned:
“Please keep our 15-year-old grandson Leo and our family in your prayers. Leo passed away last night when he fell from a boat during rowing practice. If so inclined, please perform an act of kindness today because that is what Leo would want.”
