Potentially Former Canadian Wannabe
Never met the man because he was retired by the time I started working at the Mercury News, but he’s a legend and certainly one of the most colorful characters to ever grace a newsroom. Lee Quarnstrom’s obit: What a life.
Lee Quarnstrom was a delightful guy. Smart and fun. He once told me that when the Mercury News sent him to L.A. for a story and editors questioned why he had rented a Cadillac, he said, “You don’t want people to think I work at a two-bit operation, do you?”
My friend Lee Quarnstrom is gone. He passed away this morning in Southern California. Here he is with our officemate Bob Levy, in the Santa Cruz bureau of the San Jose Mercury News — more years ago than I care to count. Bob died in 1990 after a car crash on Highway 17. I was a rookie. They were the pros. They taught me how to look, question, challenge the status quo, organize my thoughts, and turn a phrase. Both gone to journalism heaven. I can just hear them both snorting and guffawing as I write that.
Thanks for the good times!
