“This is an unusual post. It’s about a special member of the News Not Noise community, @LandisSmithers.
If you’ve ever joined one of our News Not Noise zooms you knew Landis. You got to experience his creative mind and enthusiasm for engagement. He was always ready with a provocative question, a challenge to look at an issue through another frame.
Off group zooms, I got to know Landis as a champion and friend. He was a killer creative director and our new logo is thanks to Landis and the intros he made — to uber-talented Jess Neil @jessneil who designed it, and the magnificent Tim Johnson @j_hns_n who gets things done.
Landis used to send me TikToks and notes about interesting things creators are doing or culture trends I should know. He was always warm and excited. He had that rare capacity to make you excited too. He inspired people to be more themselves, reveal their true voice, unleashes their potential. He was an inspiration and a force of nature.
A few months ago Landis’ partner Tim called with the news. Landis had died overnight. It was unexpected and shocking. It’s hard to understand how a person who was so alive can just — leave. He burned with energy to build, create, do more.
I haven’t done a zoom with you all since he died. And I’ve waited to post this until those closest to him had a chance to start the grieving process in private. For now, I just want to honor Landis and his partner Tim. I’ll go back to doing zooms I promise.
For anyone who wants to honor him, his family asks that those who can — donate to your favorite animal rescue, arts organization, social diversity or justice charity. His favorite dog rescue was Bullies and Buddies. A favorite arts organization was Midnight Circus. A favorite LGBT charity was Ali Forney Center. A favorite Social Justice charity was Southern Poverty Law Center.
If you knew Landis and want to share memories in the comments below, please do so. Or share memories of a person who believed in and inspired you. Miss you Landis, but I still hear your wisdom all the time!”
The cause of her death was not released to the public.
