Kym Shurbutt Obituary – Death: Kym “Bogie” Shurbutt, of Beach, South Carolina and original cast member of The Carolina Opry, died on Friday night after a courageous fight with cancer in the ICU at MUSC.
Kym Shurbutt attended Paul M. Dorman High School and Dorman High School in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He studied at Spartanburg Community College.
Everyone in the ICU considered him a friend, a colleague, and a family member. His sense of humour was energizing and appealing, and his movement was fluid and precise. He entertained three generations of visitors and inhabitants to the Grand Strand.
He was fantastic at Myrtle Beach’s Carolina Opry Theater and would be sorely missed by his family, friends, and fans.
Friends expressed their sympathies on social media.
“If Kym “Bogie” Shurbutt made you laugh at The Carolina Opry…heaven is filled with laughs today (and what a great vocalist too) following his untimely passing last night from cancer. A South Carolina legend who brought a lot of people joy for many years and helped put that show on the map!
Trivia: Kym was hired to be the show’s sound man upon its opening in 1986, but was asked to fill in for the original comedian opening night who became too ill to go on…and the rest became history. Talk about fate!”
