The State of Florida and the nation have lost an environmental champion. W. Kent Bailey suffered a
massive heart attack on September 22, 2020, while doing remodeling work on his home.
Kent has left giant shoes to fill in Tampa Bay and our State. He was a tireless worker and had a huge
heart. Kent always placed the needs of others ahead of his own. His heart was so big that it couldn’t
keep pace with Kent’s brilliant mind and his drive and desire to help protect what is left of our fragile,
sensitive environmental lands.
Each month at our monthly meetings, members of our ExCom in the Tampa Bay Group would marvel at
the sheer volume of work that Kent performed each month in addressing environmental issues on the
local and state level. Yet, he still found time to deeply study climate science and was the renowned local
expert on sea level rise in the Tampa Bay region. Kent’s public presentations on the anticipated
devastating effects of sea level rise in Tampa Bay were not only fact-based (using a comparison of
predicted tides versus actual reported tides validated by climate scientists), but were also sobering and
frightening. Sadly, he will be proven correct in his predictions and if he was with us, he would be
sounding the clarion call daily.
Kent’s contributions to our community are too numerous to list here, but perhaps his most important
work was spearheading the saving of “Cone Ranch” (the Lower Green Swamp Preserve) the largest
undeveloped tract of land in Hillsborough County that Kent was instrumental in having preserved as an
ELAPP property that will never be developed.
Kent also possessed amazing political skills and was a fantastic leader, always leading by example and
always giving credit to others and being a cheerleader for their contributions. The loss for our
community, our State, and Sierra Club is immeasurable. We have lost a giant for the environmental
We are all heartbroken and yet have to carry on in his name. As Kent would say, “there is so much work
to be done.”

It is with deep sorrow that the Hillsborough County Democratic Party and its Environmental Caucus mourn the passing of Kent Bailey, environmental activist and Sierra Club Tampa Bay Group Chairperson.

A giant of the Tampa Bay environmental community died Tuesday. As leader of the local @SierraClub he rallied against fossil fuels and urged local officials to prepare for sea level rise.

We are greatly saddened by the passing of Kent Bailey. He was a great environmental advocate and a valuable member of the EPC’s Environmental Feedback Group. He leaves a wonderful legacy behind and we will miss him. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family.

Kent Bailey was a true leader as he communicated in real, meaningful terms about how Florida’s environment was tied to all aspects of our lives. He will be missed but not forgotten. We’ll continue his efforts by always protecting Tampa Bay

Kent Bailey was a master woodworker and hobbyist sailor who became a giant in the Tampa Bay environmental community. His daughter said he “learned every day.
