Former Jockey, Media Specialist Church Dies at 90 Ken Church, a prominent national rider from the 1940s to the 1960s who transitioned to racetrack media work in Southern California, died July 13 at a hospital in Reno, Nevada, his daughter, Debbie Anderson, reported. He was 90.

Thoughts are with the family of former jockey and Del Mar media man Ken Church, who passed away Monday at the age of 90.

Longtime racing fans might remember Church as a jockey who raced on various circuits across the United States, winning in excess of 2,000 races before he retired. He also rode in Southern California, riding well known horses like Native Diver.

In addition to his victories, Church also won riding titles at Arlington and Washington Park in Illinois.

Following his riding years, Church moved into the media aspect of racing, namely in Southern California. He worked at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Del Mar, and he was particularly known at the latter track, serving in a media position from the 1970s to 1990s.

Church was also a winner of Del Mar’s “Rocking Chair Derby,” a race featuring retired jockeys the track hosted for several years in the 1970s. Church won the 1974 edition of the event.

He is survived by his son, two daughters, their spouses, and nine grandchildren.
