I’m sorry to share the very sad news that APAG member Jurgen Schadeberg passed away. From his wife Claudia,

“Sad to report that Jurgen Schadeberg passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness. He leaves a landmark legacy of seven decades of visual history. He dedicated his photographic life and career to shining a light on human rights and social justice. He will be missed.”

Jurgen’s work is amazing and so important, as it focused on historic events and people fighting for social justice for the past 70 years. It Includes his extensive photographs of the first President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. I was so pleased to see Jurgen on an APAG Zoom call last month along with Claudia, who has been a regular attendee. Jurgen was a big hit in the breakout room at the end of the meeting, and I was hoping he could do a presentation for us in the near future. I recently received a surprise gift inscribed by Jurgen, it was his memoir, “The Way I see It.” I was so glad to get to know Claudia and learn about Jurgen’s work the last few years, and hope the archive will find the right institution to help preserve it. My deepest condolences to Claudia, their son Charlie and the entire Schadeberg family.

Jurgen Schadeberg was an award winning German photographer who lived in South Africa and captured its history remarkably well. He passed away over the weekend. Here’s one of his iconic pictures from the 80s. Still happening in many parts of the world!

Deeply saddened to hear of German/South African photographer Jurgen Schadeberg’s death. I use his work in *all* of my teaching–as illustrations & for deeper concerns of representation & aesthetics. He also mentored many of the most important 20th century black SA photographe
