Tributes To Julia Nixon
Across social media users’ timelines are statements that show respect, admiration, and gratitude towards Nixon as people mourn the passing.
I am devastated to learn that my friend, Julia Nixon died yesterday. An astonishing singer, enigmatic personality, and a true DC icon, she was unforgettable. I am forever grateful to have had the chance to work with her so much over the last 11 years, on the Bacharach-David, Last Waltz, Southern Soul & Beatles Love Songs shows & several BandHouse tributes, including Stevie Wonder and The Rolling Stones. Like a lot of people, I first heard Julia in the ’80s during Julia & Company’s residency at Mr Henry’s Adams Morgan. I first got to know Julia in 2010 when I called her out of the blue about performing on BandHouse Gigs first British Invasion tribute at Strathmore. I had the idea she might be a good choice to sing a couple Petula Clark songs. I was used to hearing Julia singing soul & rhythm & blues, Aretha and Gladys Knight etc so I wasn’t sure if she would go for singing Petula. But when I mentioned that we’d like her to sing “Downtown” she told me she loved Petula Clark and so we were off! Julia crushed “Downtown” and then everything else I ever asked her to sing. I never tired of seeing people’s jaws drop when they heard her. In 2013 I started Newmyer Flyer and I had long wanted to produce a Burt Bacharach- Hal David tribute. But I thought the complexity of the music and the vocal demands meant the show would be better served in a different format than the multiple lead performer format we used with BandHouse. I decided to do it with one band (with all the fixings)and for the first time, just one lead singer for the whole show. Julia was the only one I considered for that spot. She had the vocal dexterity to manage the acrobatic melodic leaps Burt had written for Dionne Warwick and she could also summon the powerful belt of Aretha as exemplified on her version of I Say A Little Prayer. It was an exquisite combination of skills that Julia possessed and that show which we performed 7 times, remains one of my favorites. It was only possible because Julia had the goods to pull it off.
We are so terribly saddened at the loss of the iconic and legendary Julia Nixon. Not only was she a long time entertainer and friend of Mr. Henry’s, she was also out light, our playmate, and our diva! We will miss her presence greatly but will never forget her personality and legacy. Our hearts go out to all who loved her…..
