Legendary Brazilian modernist master Jorge Zalszupin sadly passed away on 17 August. Born in Poland, he lived in France and emigrated to Brazil in 1949 carrying a motorcycle with a Paris license plate in his luggage. A few years later, he founded his seminal design house L’Atelier, which many consider to be the benchmark for Brazilian Modernism. He also collaborated with Oscar Niemeyer in the creation of Brazil’s monumental capital city, Brasília.
Zalszupin leaves behind a career punctuated by timeless designs and spotless woodworking. One of the iconic pieces he conceived was the JZ Tea Trolley, a Brazilian modernist classic with a bottom shelf that resembles folded origami. His legacy will continue to inspire and shape future generations of designers and architects all over the world.

Designer Jorge Zalszupin dies, modernist furniture genius
Architect and designer Jorge Zalszupin died, aged 98, on Monday (17).
Zalszupin was the founder of one of the biggest brands of Brazilian modern design, L ‘ Atelier. Created in 1959, the company gained prominence by modernist furniture, marked by the sculptural use of Brazilian wood and the influence of traces of Scandinavian furniture.
