Composer Jon Gibson Death – Dead | Obituary – Passed Away

Jon Gibson Death – Dead: A great loss was made known to InsideEko. As friends and families of the deceased are mourning the passing of their loved and cherished Jon Gibson.

As great a composer and performer that Jon Gibson was, not to be forgotten is his wry and irreverent sense of humor. It almost got so that we couldn’t sit next to each other in concerts, afraid we’d burst into laughter. I’m really going to miss him.

RIP Jon Gibson.
I stumbled onto Jon Gibson’s music and artwork thanks to @PRINTED_MATTER who printed an excellent book of his that I picked up a few years ago.
His music was transcendent and really under celebrated

Really sad to hear about Jon Gibson’s passing. I remember hearing this because of Alan Licht’s minimalism top ten list. I got into experimental music via ambient so this was naturally something I dug a lot. I remember just sort of stopping time with this.

one of the finest moments in 20th cent music, 12th mvmt of ‘music in 12 parts’ which ends up as a long phrase in 12 different key centers, i like to think a musical joke on the dominant academic serialism in american music at the time

RIP jon gibson!

My heart has dropped upon hearing of the passing of my friend Jon Gibson, who’s musical output had a profound influence on me as a player and composer. I’ll always cherish the opportunity I had to play and tour with him. Music wouldn’t be the same without him.

Rest In Peace Jon Gibson (1940-2020), flautist, saxophonist, composer, visual artist, founding member of the Philip Glass Ensemble, and much more. Pictured here with Glass at ISSUE in 2012

Our friend, Jon Gibson – 1940-2020
Jon Gibson was one of the people responsible for the new musical languages which came out of the 1960s and 70s. Jon brought the technique of circular-breathing to the music, and to the Philip Glass Ensemble.

Spent many hours trying to figure out how Jon Gibson “did that thing” on @PhilipGlass records. Master of circular breathing and experimental genius. Huge influence. #RIP

Sad to hear of Jon Gibson’s passing — a wonderful musician and composer. Always a pleasure to play with him in the annual “In C” in New York, especially as he had taken part in its first performance.

Jon Gibson (1940-2020) played in the premiere performance of Terry Riley’s In C at the San Francisco Tape Music Center on Nov 4 1964. He’s on the original recording of Reich’s Drumming. Dig into nearly anything interesting in American minimalism and you’ll find Gibson nearby #RIP

R.I.P. Jon Gibson. When I saw him perform at @BigEarsFestival a couple of years ago, I tweeted that it was the best music I’d ever heard white people perform in a church. One of his sons saw what I wrote and I was informed Jon was very amused by that.
