John Thompson Death – Dead: A great loss was made known to InsideEko. John Thompson Jr. was an American Basketball coach, who was the first black head coach to win an NCAA national championship in a major sport.

John Thompson Jr. wasn’t just a giant for the men’s basketball program, he was also a  regular supporter of women’s practices and games as well.

As friends and families of the deceased are mourning the passing of their loved and cherished John Thompson.


Legendary Georgetown Basketball coach John Thompson Jr. has died.

His coaching legacy includes the recruitment and development of four Hall of Fame players: Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo, Patrick Ewing and Allen Iverson.

Saddened to hear about the passing of John Thompson Jr.
Growing up in the DC area and watching him build the Georgetown program from the ground up was an inspiration.
His family, friends, former players and all those he inspired are in my thoughts and prayers today.

John Thompson Jr. was a legend. As the first Black basketball coach to win the NCAA, he not only made history, but he opened a door of inspiration for a new generation. He coached at Georgetown for 27 years, and won nearly 600 games. He will be missed, but his legacy lives on.

Hall-of-Fame and legendary Georgetown coach John Thompson Jr. passed away at age 78. Thompson coached Georgetown for 27 seasons, leading the school to its only National Championship in 1984, becoming the first black head coach to win a men’s Division I basketball championship.

John Thompson Jr., the first Black basketball head coach to win the NCAA National Championship, died at his Arlington, Virginia home Sunday night, according to his family. He was 78.

John Thompson Jr. was a legend on and off the court.

In 1989, the Hall of Fame coach protested a new academic eligibility rule that he believed targeted African-American athletes, denying them of scholarships.

“Our father was an inspiration to many and devoted his life to developing young people,” his family said in a statement.
