Old Hill Cricket Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former player John Brian ‘Jack’ Sedgley at the age of 81.
Jack was born in West Bromwich on 17th February 1939, and made his League debut for Dudley at the age of 18, making his first League century two years later in 1959. At Dudley, he played alongside Ron Headley, who would also go on to represent Old Hill with great success.
Jack’s early promise was noticed by Worcestershire County Cricket Club, and he enjoyed a successful spell with the Second XI between 1959 and 1961, making eight fifties and three centuries. He stepped up to the First XI, playing 15 first-class games making two half-centuries with a top score of 95 against Derbyshire at New Road in June 1960.
After a spell with Stourbridge, Jack joined Old Hill in the early ’60s and became a stalwart in the team, batting consistently. He made his highest score for the club in 1973, scoring 122 not out in an away match at Kidderminster, and he also scored 500 runs in a season while at the club.
Jack had spells at Moseley and Mitchells & Butlers and returned to Dudley taking on a number of roles before the club folded in 1985. In later years Jack returned to Haden Hill as a keen spectator and supporter of the club, and always took time to encourage young players to enjoy the game and to pass on his knowledge. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him at the club.
Jack’s son, Mark, also represented Old Hill with distinction, and we send our sincerest condolences to him and the rest of Jack’s family.
