Having heard about this great loss, the family of this individual is passing through pains, mourning the unexpected passing of their beloved.

Really sad news. John Okell was a master of Burmese language, beloved inside Myanmar and by so many students scattered across the globe. “His passion was infectious. He spoke so eloquently about the details of the language”.

Terribly sad to hear that John Okell OBE, the British linguist and renowned Myanmar language teacher, passed away this week at the age of 86. John started his career at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London in 1959. He first visited Burma in 1960-61, and developed a lifelong passion for the country’s language and culture. He became one of the world’s leading Myanmar language teachers, and taught many staff from the British Embassy in Yangon over the years. He retired from SOAS in 1999, but continued travelling to Myanmar every year to teach short intensive courses. We are sure he will be remembered extremely fondly by all who were lucky enough to meet him.

To honour John’s passing, we are sharing this video from 2016, in which he talks about his love of the country and language.

Sad news, Burmese language expert John Okell has died. His passion for language learning was unparalleled. John was always super generous with his time and will be sadly missed.

Very sad to hear about John Okell’s passing. I will always hear his voice when I (try to) read Burmese script. Many fond memories learning this beautiful language with the Okell books & tapes.

John Okell, a giant of Burmese language instruction, has died, according to a Facebook post from student and colleague Justin Watkins. I was lucky enough to interact with Okell once at a Burmese language party. His passion for the language was so evident. RIP.

We are still working on getting more details about the death, as family statement on the death is yet to be released.
