Yesterday, we received the devastating news that the Dutch citizen, and a member of our community, Johan Jacobus Kootte, lost his life after a polar bear attacked his tent at Longyearbyen Camping Friday morning before dawn. Johan who worked at the camping site, sustained deadly injuries from the attack, and died shortly afterwards, only 38 years old. The attacking polar bear was subsequently shot and killed.
– This is indeed a tragic event, and we are all saddened by the news. We extend our warm condolences to his family, his friends, his colleagues and everyone who loved him. Our thoughts, and the thoughts of the entire local community in Longyearbyen, are with you all in this dark moment, says Manager of Tourism, Ronny Brunvoll.
– It is also a brutal reminder that we live in the middle of Arctic nature and that polar bears are never far away, he adds.
The Governor of Svalbard is currently investigating the incident.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
