“In times to come, when we are all gone, people not yet born will walk in the sunshine of their own days because of what women and men did at this hour to feed the sick, to heal and to comfort.”

Farewell to the great Jim Dwyer. His last piece sings.

I’m very saddened to let you know that Jim Dwyer, a cherished colleague who was one of the greatest NYC reporters of his generation, passed away this morning.
It’s a heartbreaking and devastating loss.
This is the note that Dean Baquet and I just sent to the NYT newsroom.

Saddened by the loss of NYT reporter Jim Dwyer. Always loved his work. Very often when I especially enjoyed the writing in a metro story, I’d note that it was his byline.

A toast to my beloved colleague Jim Dwyer, a poet of the streets of New York, whose lyrical prose was the stuff of novels and whose generosity, warmth and drive to expose injustice were a roadmap for how to be a humane reporter and person. R.I.P, Jim.

We mourn the loss of our member Jim Dwyer. An incredible journalist who stood against injustice, he was a compassionate union leader and advocate for his @NYTimesGuild coworkers. His legacy will be long lasting and his solidarity will be greatly missed.

What a horrible loss for our city and for journalism.

Jim Dwyer was a quintessential New Yorker—telling the story of this city and its people with moral clarity and passionate purpose.

Rest In peace.

Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Jim Dwyer, a columnist for three New York City newspapers across a long and storied career, died Thursday. He was 63.

The native New Yorker, a former Daily News columnist, joined The New York Times in 2001.

Very sad to hear of Jim’s death. Do read about his brilliant work and legacy. He was also kind. A son of Sneem and Galway, he was good to me when I arrived in New York. Thinking of his friends, of which there are many.

Desperately sorry to hear about the death of Jim Dwyer, a great journalist and a really lovely colleague when I worked on the Daily News. And always a great and knowledgable friend of Ireland. My deepest sympathies to Catherine, Maura and Catherine Elisabeth,

As we reflect on the life and legacy of New York journalist Jim Dwyer, we are returning to Dwyer’s interview for NYPL’s Community Oral History Project. He spoke about Washington Heights, his home for over 30 years.

incredibly sad & shocked about this, he was a friend to so many including my family and our friends. he spent his whole life uplifting people. what a kind and wonderful and deeply sweet person jim is and was. rest in peace jim

“A big part of my job is to talk with brilliant scientists, great artists, the amazing people you meet just walking around the streets of New York. What could be more fun than that?” Rest in Peace Jim Dwyer

A lot of New York reporters like to show they’ve read the Power Broker, but Jim Dwyer had shelves and shelves of New York political history in his head, would help with any idea you had, and was unfailingly supportive of young reporters. He will be truly missed

One of the great columnists I have ever read in a newspaper, and one of the great gentleman our business has ever produced — Jim Dwyer of the @nytimes — has died much too soon at the age of 63. It was an honor to read him, to work with him once, to have known him.

Jim Dwyer, a newsman of consequence, a determined voice for the vulnerable, a mentor to so many, and a dear friend, has died. New York City and American journalism are less as a result. Here is the @nytimes obit I cannot yet read:

It is with sadness that we have learned news of the death of journalist Jim Dwyer, a hard-hitting reporter and mentor to countless whose @nytimes column, About New York, captured the voices of everyday New Yorkers. His style, character, grace, wit and conscience will be missed.

A great journalist and human being, and a writer of the most beautiful prose. We Jesuits were so proud of him.

May he rest in peace.

Jim Dwyer, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist, Dies at 63

Working for New York Newsday, The Daily News and The Times, he covered the human stories of New York in dramatic prose and crusaded against injustice.

In times to come, when we are all gone, people not yet born will walk in the sunshine of their own days because of what women and men did at this hour to feed the sick, to heal and to comfort,” Jim Dwyer wrote on the pandemic in his final column in May.

We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
