To the ASU Family:
We are saddened to announce the sudden passing today of a longtime Alabama State University employee and loyal member of the Hornet Nation family, Jay Holcey.
Jay was the music and programming director of ASU’s WVAS 90.7 FM radio station, and for several years, he served as its interim station manager.
He was a familiar voice on ASU’s public radio station and was an on-air presence for a diverse set of programming, which included Jazz, public affairs and sports.
We offer our deepest condolences and prayers to Jay’s family and coworkers.
Rest in peace to my dear friend and radio comrade, Jay Frazier Holcey. I’m beyond shocked at this news. He held things down at WVAS in Montgomery, Alabama on the campus of Alabama State University. We were the rare Genxers who are in jazz radio. Not too many hip-hop generation cats got into jazz radio. He supported my band, he picked up my syndicated radio show and he was just a beautiful cat. He was an honorary member of the Atlanta soul scene and you could catch him dancing at Spreadlove, House In The Park and wherever good music could be heard. Going to miss those cool conversations and his good spirit. Rest well brother.
Jay Frazier Holcey sat beside me for thousands of hours producing our sports radio show on SportsRadio 740 every morning for years. But he also sat next to me at two funerals, and made and shared many memories between us.
How many times did John Longshore and I try to make Jay laugh on the air, just so our listeners could know and love that deep, booming laugh that, like his personality, would fill a room?
How many times would I ask for his perspective on something, because I admired his depth and intelligence?
The clear answer is: not enough times, because I’d give anything to hear that laugh, or get his counsel, just once more, or to tell him just once again how much I respected him. My shock at hearing of his passing is profound, my sorrow is immense, but my gratitude that I knew him and shared a friendship with Jay is purely felt. He was truly an unforgettable man.
We’re very saddened by the passing of DJ Jay Frazier Holcey of WVAS-FM 90.7 in Montgomery, AL. Thank you for your support of our music, Jay. You and your kindness will not be forgotten! Good thoughts go out to your family and friends in this time of sadness.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as family statement on the death is yet to be released.
