Chicago-based guitarist Mike Allemana reports the passing of Ira Sullivan, the terrific saxophonist/trumpeter who played with everybody – Prez, Bird, Roland Kirk, Red Rodney, Blakey. Look at this photo from 1953 at the Bee Hive: Sullivan (2nd from left) in a crowd around Bird.

I don’t own much Ira Sullivan, but I’ve just dug out this thoroughly Chicago date and he sounds great playing four different axes like it’s nothing, all in a day’s work. RIP

“Yesterday, multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan passed away at 89. If you don’t know his name, that is an unfortunate failure of mainstream Jazz education. He played through almost every era of jazz and performed with the greatest musicians of all time…”

Am hearing through reliable sources that the great Miami-based jazz saxophonist/trumpeter and bandleader Ira Sullivan has passed away. So happy that I got to hear him several times over the years, and interview him, too. He was always kind. A big loss to the music world

Thanks Ira for inspiring so many people. I stopped playing jazz a few years ago and have been telling myself that I’d get back to it. I’m starting up again today in your honor. Thank you so much. #IraSullivan

This year keeps getting worse and worse. Today, jazz great, teacher, mentor, and friend of mine Ira Sullivan passed away. I remember coming into camp the first day playing the drums. He wanted vibes on a song and I remember him asking if I knew how to play.

RIP Ira. We became huge fans while living in Florida, where he lived & played. We had the privilege of talking to him many times & enjoying this wise & wonderful man. We join his family, musical colleagues, & friends in saying may his memory be a blessing

Miami jazz great Ira Sullivan dies at 89. This is very sad. When I first moved to Miami in 1969 Ira was the headliner at the Traveler Inn on US 1 owned by my best friend’s father. I kept bumping into Ira throughout the years and I miss him.

Sad to hear about the passing of Ira Sullivan, an amazing multi-instrumentalist and jazz educator. Thursday nights in Coconut Grove were always a treat! @wdnaradio @mjazzer
