Ira Hamden, an EDHS alumnus, Shamrocks quarterback, teacher, coach and principal, died at 58 following complications after a stroke. He was 58. He was a principal in the Clintondale School District and a great human being.
I’ve thought a lot about Ira Hamden this last few days.
I’ve known him since jr high. I got to know him during hell week in 1978 at East Detroit. He tore my new spirit pak shorts on day one trying to pants me in line for cals.
Later we did pass drills and he missed me. That happened a lot. Lol. He always joked about missing such a big receiver.
He was a fantastic athlete and hit like a freight train.
When he and I coached together he was a great teacher. I’ll always remember we were watching the first JV game of the year and we were losing. Decided to go into locker room and fire kids up. He punched locker at memorial team room. Kids were wild. When we left he asked to go to hospital cuz he thought he broke his hand. We decided to watch end of game and see if it hurt later. Not sure he ever went.
Also remember golfing in shamrock open tournament. We finished early and waited. He was tied for first but after two hours in clubhouse he was in no condition to tee off. He duck hooked the drive into corn field. Don’t remember if he won but we laughed for two weeks straight.
Went to clinic and while he waited in my front room he taught me to paint trim without taping.
I loved his post office stories also.
Could see him after a year and pick up conversation.
Played a lot of hoops together in Kelly gym and with staff. Good guys. Ira, myself, Bob Hock, Matt Joseph, Al Torp, Carl Hoffman and a few others. We probably would have beat the high school kids in a route.
Life is too short. He loved Sue and those kids. He was a proud brother, husband, father, educator and friend.
Love you Ira.
It is truly an unbelievable day. Today my brother Ira Hamden has passed away earlier this evening. He is a great husband, father, son, brother, and uncle. My brother was instrumental in making me and my brother Eddie the men we are today. And words cannot express how grateful I am to of have him in my life.
Ira always saw the good in people and would do all he could to help others. He would always put other people before himself.
The world has truly lost a treasure in humanity today.
I will miss you dearly my brother.
To those of you that went to Kelly Middle School.
Those of us that worked for the East Detroit Public Schools .

Heartbroken by the sudden passing of our principal and friend, Ira Hamden. Ira was the kind of guy that would have you in his office for 30 minutes. The first 2 min to talk business, and the next 28 talking and about our families, golf, vacations, old coaching stories…you name it. He was always laughing and was completely devoted to his families…. both the one at home and the one at school. I’m still in shock he’s gone. RIP friend. I hope you’re enjoying an Arnold Palmer with Arnold himself.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as family statement on the death is yet to be released.
