LONG STANDING FORMER LOCAL AUTHORITY REPRESENTATIVE DIES
I was saddened to hear of the death of former Douglas Councillor Inkerman Faragher, one of ‘the old guard’ and longest serving members of the Island’s largest local authority.
I knew Councillor Faragher primarily via his role in the now discontinued IOM Whitley Council for Public Sector Manual Workers which for almost four decades regulated the terms and conditions for manual and craft workers employed by government and local authorities. The Council was also used as a determinate for many of the pay rates in the private sector. It’s role in improving the lot of manual and craft workers in the latter part of the twentieth century has never been really fully appreciated
Councillor Faragher was a representative for Douglas Corporation as an the Employer’s representative so therefore was on ‘the other side’ of the Council. I was Secretary of the Employees side at the time. I think it’s fair to say that Whitley could at times be something of a ‘bear garden’ as the battles to improve terms and conditions were waged. However in this atmosphere both he and the other local authority representatives were always measured, fair, balanced and courteous and often were less dogmatic than their central government colleagues appointed from Tynwald.
Sorry to hear of the passing of Inkerman Faragher at the age of 96. Always young at heart Inky together with Malcolm Black contested St George’s Ward on the Douglas Town Council with me in 1983 when I was first elected. Amazing to think how long he had been involved in the Town Council, right back to the 1960s when my Grandad C A Kinley was a Councillor and he was still contesting elections in the 2000s. Thoughts with his family. A real character and a life well lived ..
For those who don’t know, my grandad Inkerman Faragher passed away peacefully at Noble’s Hospital on Friday the 17th of July 2020 aged 96. The funeral service will be held at the Douglas Borough Crematorium at 10.00am Friday the 24th July 2020. We request family flowers only and any donations be made to Isle of play to help them continue the excellent work they do in helping the next generation of children here on our beautiful island.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as family statement on the death is yet to be released.
